Peacock: a workshop for art is a printmaking studio established 48 years ago, situated off Castlegate in the heart of Aberdeen’s old printmaking quarter.

Using the old and new printing technologies of the Albion Press and the Risograph on this workshop participants will be able to colour in prints made with reproductions of the woodblocks used by Raban as well as some other late-19th century printing blocks. Using our wooden type selection they will then be able to print their name onto the print using the same technique used by Raban 400 years ago. The workshop is being run twice (identically content) in the morning and the afternoon.

To celebrate this momentous anniversary in the history of Aberdeen, Peacock is offering a series of practical workshops on the use of the letterpress, similar to the type used by Raban all those years ago, and the Risograph, a modern printmaking technique that lends itself to poster-making. The two techniques can be combined to produce eye-catching artwork. The workshops will be conducted by one of Peacock’s own master printers, Neil Corall.
There will be two series of workshops running from July through to October – one series aimed at school-age kids one for adults. For each audience there will be a tailored workshop on letterpress and one on Risograph. For the letterpress workshops, there will be the opportunity to use reproductions of the same woodblocks used by Raban, late-19th century printing blocks and a wide range of wooden typefaces. For the Risograph workshops, attendees will be able to develop their own artwork.
