This volume Philosophia Theologiæ Ancillans was written by Dr Robert Baron and is the only example on display today of a work printed by Edward Raban during his time working in St Andrews (1620-22). This volume was printed in 1621 and the colophon shows that he was printer to both the Town and the University there.
Robert Baron (1596-1639) taught philosophy at St Andrews before being ordained in 1619. At the time this book was printed he had become Minister of Keith in Banffshire (where he had succeeded Patrick Forbes on the latter’s consecration as Bishop of Aberdeen). Baron and Forbes are part of the complex spider’s web network of connections that Raban had. He was also one of the celebrated ‘Aberdeen Doctors’ who stood firm against the National Covenant.
